Margins is a new ecologically focussed gardening service located in, and around, Hackney, London. Margins brings together urban conservation work with horticulture.

We are not your typical garden maintenance firm, but instead specialise in creating and maintaining low-maintenance gardens as ecosystems so they function better to support food webs and provide habitat for the insects and birds all around us.

We make small changes to small spaces, creating gardens that are beautiful for us and welcoming to the insects and birds we share them with. Insect populations across the UK are in serious decline, and gardens are one of the few places we can do something about it. In practice, this can mean adding native plants that provide nectar, pollen, seeds, or berries, alongside other simple changes that improve habitat and soil health.

Sometimes city life can make us feel separate from the natural world, but I assure you it’s still there, at the edges, in the margins, holding on, sometimes even thriving. From the song birds hiding in the neighbour’s shrub, to the hoverfly feeding on some yarrow in the park – we can help nature move about the city by curating gardens which support them with food, water, and shelter.

You don’t need a big garden, expert knowledge, or hours of spare time to help nature thrive. You just need Margins.
